Iguana
Liquid fire straight from the sun
Caresses the inert body.
Sleep-weighted lids flutter down over
Gleaming, wet eyes.
Dripping bags of horny skin
Throb under the stretched throat.
The chin rises, eyes snap.
Saliva puddles in anticipation.
Skin ripples as fat muscles
Glide over bone.
Keen, hooked talons clutch
Nubbins of crumbled shale.
Taut, warm flesh scrapes
through acrid dust.
Joints slide in rhythmic motion.
Bone triangles writhe as the ropey tail
Divides clouds of red earth.
Jaws wiggle while minuscule teeth
Munch on a flower.
Hunger ceases.
